I like to sum up this K-Beauty goodness with 3 words — easy, simple, and effective. Each product brings something to the table and my 2 favorites are Purpletale’s 5 Steps to Lovely Skin for only $8 and Once Upon a Neck Cream for $40.

Like me, Allure is raving about their product in The Purpletale 5 Steps to Lovely Skin Pack Does Everything for Just $8: calling it “a magic five-in-one skin-care kit” as it’s filled with everything you need for your nightly regimen. She also goes on to explain that she’s pleasantly surprised that this Purpletale regime took a lot less time than her regular routine.

My final verdict: the Purpletale system was so easy to use. Seriously—it’s all right there in one packet.

The TSA-friendly kit includes a foam cleanser, an ampoule, a facial cream, a neck cream and a nourishing sheet mask.

What makes the ingredients different ↓

Part of what makes them stand out are their ingredients like ginseng, which has great medicinal uses. It’s been used in Asian medicine for centuries, and for good reason. It helps boost energy and straightens the over all immune system. In terms of skin, it stimulates collagen production and helps improve the over all complexion.

To paint a better picture of Young-Ji’s background — she lives in Manhattan with her husband. Born in Korea, she came to NY at the age of 8 and grew up in Long Island. She went to NYU in 2001 and studied marketing. Her career led her to work with companies like Samsung. She also specialized in advertising and management consulting. Young-Ji said that she never thought much about her appearance and beauty until her trip to Korea.

… experiencing such a narrow perspective of beauty, I had to step out and think about what beauty really means to me. The more I thought about it, the more I noticed it’s objective. I realized I was basically giving people permission to judge my beauty.

With a big heart she declares that everyone is beautiful, in their own way. Purpletale is here to remind people that they are beautiful just the way they are. Their mission is to provide beauty products that both do and feel good. To use the brand as a platform to spread the message you are beautiful the way you are!

GD: What inspires you to follow your dream?

YJP: Looking at how the world changes through small beliefs. What inspires me is getting feedback from people on how much they love the product, how it’s improved their life — it gets me going because it does get hard. I am aiming to have Purpletale incorporated into routines. I focus on simplifying.

GD: When did your aha moment come?

YJP: A lot of Purpletale is motivated by my personal story and family. I knew I wanted to go back and forth to Korea because my parents live there. I wanted to make a natural progression into the beauty world and I felt that I had a special story to share.

The biggest shock for me — well this happened multiple times — but what shocked me the most was an experience I had in an elevator with my boss, at the time. He asked my coworkers about me, in front of me → ‘How many pounds do you think she lost?’ and that was mortifying. I wish I said something then but I was so shaken up, so I didn’t. Looking back, I was stupid because I still went to lunch with them. That moment I knew, that this unrealistic image of perfection and beauty in Korea was bigger than me.

In a way it motivated me and I became healthier, but first I dealt with a lot of confusion and I let them define me just based off of my appearance. Sadly, my education didn’t matter. If I could go back 4 years, I would remind myself there are more things that make me whole rather than my appearance.

I also believe that each experience is necessary. I am fortunate that this happened in my more mature years rather than my teenage years.

Working in that environment was pretty toxic and naturally shopping for beauty products was a way out. Since they’re accessible and cheap in Korea, it became part of my routine. Popping into drugstores on my free-time to see what was new. Curious as to what the latest textures and innovations were. I don’t wear much make-up and it was amazing to see a lot of products made with Asian skin care in mind.

YJP: I was bothered as to how the marketing aimed at perfecting yourself, like who you are wasn’t good enough. While I like the products, it didn’t sit well with me and made me feel a little more vulnerable in a sense. A common theme in Korean beauty is whiting. It was interesting that the industry kept steering us into lighter complexions.

The idea of Purpletale is that we have a very simplified collection. One of our best products is our 5 Steps to Lovely Skin. Our answer for busy professionals always on the go. I thought of this product when I would travel back and forth from NYC to Sole. It became annoying to decant everything so I came up with this 5-step in a easy travel size that I can carry easily.

GD: What advice do you have for future young entrepreneurs?

YJP: For me, the entrepreneurial journey is like a a rollercoaster ride, with both high and low moments when I least expect it. And I think it’s incredibly important to build a supportive network of friends and family who also believe in you and your vision 200% so that they can help you get up when you are down. One thing I wish I realized earlier is that it’s OK to go out there to make new friends who have similar entrepreneurial goals — it’s very practical and helpful in so many aspects. I also think that my friends are thankful that I don’t bore them with my details of my entrepreneurial whenever we meet up.
